Script - Find Edges

Creating paintings from Photo Tubes

From this to these...

I do alot of old car tubes. Some of the photos are difficult to make into tubes because of shadows and reflections in the shiny paint surface and glass. I use several techniques to dull those reflections and remove the background images from the windows, but from time to time, I run into a car that's too shiny and cannot be tweaked easily. Playing around I ran across this script and technique that can be applied to photo tubes, or any image that you want to give a new look to while maintaining the integrity of the original.

I have a script (I have no idea where it came from) called Find All Edges - Color.

You can dowload it here if you don't have it. Unrar it using WinRar. Put it in your restricted scripts folder. (My browser converts pspscript files to text or opens them in my browser so I zipped this to make sure you get it with as little confusion as possible.)

Below are the examples I used for this tut. I'm writing in first person to explain my steps.

1)

This is what the tube looked like when I finished tweaking the glass and the extreme red/yellow reflection in the body. Just not what I wanted. Still too much 'stuff'.

2)

I duplicated my image (Shift + D).. always duplicate your image when you are going to do alot of tweaking to it. That way you always have the original to start over with. Minimize the original and work with the copy.

Duplicate the truck layer.

Make sure the top layer is highlighted and use your magic wand to select the white area around the truck.

Tap your delete key.

3)

Reduce the opacity on the pen and ink layer until you find a level that you like best.

4)

You can play with the layer properties to get different effects. This effect is luminance (legacy) set at 74%.

This one needs just a little tweaking to remove some of the white around the edges on the luminance layer.

When you find the effect you want, merge visible layers.

Happy Painting and Script Running.
